Job Description Summary/Objective The Legal Assistant position manages a dynamic caseload or personal injury, medical malpractice and mass tort cases, researches law, investigates facts, and prepares documents to assist the attorneys by performing a variety of support and administrative duties. Essential Functions Embraces and Upholds the Firm Values Researches and analyzes law sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, treaties, constitutions, and legal codes. Prepares legal documents such as demand letters, trial binders, briefs, pleadings, and appeals for review, approval, and use by the attorneys. Investigates facts and law of case to determine causes of action and to prepare case accordingly. Performs other clerical duties such as scheduling appointments, providing information to callers, taking dictation, composing and typing routine correspondence, and reading and routing incoming mail. Prepares affidavits of documents and maintains document file. Files correspondence and legal documents in office filing system in a timely and accurate way. Ensures proper indexing and filing of original legal documents. Technical Capacity Able to operate basic office software like MS Word and Excel Able to learn and master specialized software like Trial Works, Adobe Professional and other software solutions as use by the firm. Work Environment This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This is a full-time non-exempt position, and the work week is Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5 pm Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. Required Education and Experience High School Diploma or one to two years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred Education and Experience Additional legal research certifications and coursework.
